From Watercolor to Repeat Pattern for Fabric or Paper
Presenter
Workshop Description
Creating patterns that start with watercolor and gouache on paper results in your unique hand and style, rich with texture and colors in a way that digital graphics can’t.
In this workshop, we will work hands-on on paper following three inspiration boards or your own ideas. From working with silhouettes to creating watery-flowy watercolors to more detail-rich mixed media. I will guide you on how to make the art so that it works for large repeat patterns. This art will become a stunning stand-alone repeat pattern or your collection hero (you can later work on the secondary and basic patterns).
Then, I will demo how to take the art -scan or photo- into your devices to create the repeat pattern. No device in the conference? No problem! Everyone attending this workshop will get a printout with step-by-step instructions about how I turn art on paper into patterns using Photoshop or Procreate so that you can refer to it every time you make great art.

Knowledge/Equipment Required
- This workshop is labeled intermediate because attendees need to have basic knowledge about what a repeat pattern is or have made repeat patterns digitally. Also, attendees should have at least some watercolor/gouache experience. Finally, since part of the tutorial will include an on-screen demonstration on how to finalize the pattern in photoshop, some basic knowledge of photoshop is required (I may include a demo in Procreate if there is time or provide a link to it in my website in the handout) It is not required that students have a computer or iPad. They would be doing the photoshop finishing after the workshop.
